Design Thinking and Communication (formerly EDC): Segal's Foundational Design Course

In DTC, student teams work with real clients to solve authentic problems while simultaneously learning to communicate with a variety of audiences. This innovative course integrates communication and design thinking in a series of steps:

Study the problem - conduct background research, interviews, and user observation

Frame the problem - "design the right thing" instead of simply "design the thing right"

Ideate/Prototype/Iterate - explore the problem by making ideas real, even very early in the process

Tell the story - communicate ideas in meaningful, interesting ways

Learn - gather feedback for the future

Every section of DTC is team-taught and co-evaluated by faculty from the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences Writing Program.
